Players can choose to conquer the world by military might, become a colonial superpower, establish trade dominance, etc. as one of over 500 different nations. These nations range alphabetically from Aachen to Zuni.

You may play after the end date of 1821 however Paradox does not vouch for the stabilty of the game past this point. Most people experince a slow down towards the end of the game I however have never seem the game lock anyone to a certain speed, only stutter up on higher speeds.

Upon offering unconditional surrender, all of the currently unoccupied provinces will fall under enemy control and the enemy will gain 100% warscore.

Is total war better than EU4? ›

It is more of giving you some grand strategy and more RTS at battles, castle sieges, defending. In EU4, you don't have much battle controls. It is more of a grand strategy, diplomacy, and commanding the war instead of battle. Also in EU4 you have bigger map, and more factions.

As mentioned, Spain, Ottomans and Portugal are easiest, with France coming after those 3. England and Brandenburg have weak starts. However I'd suggest Vijayanagar and Cusco as also being very strong nations with a good start that are suitable for beginners.

Prussia is arguably the best military nation in the entire game. It's a nice reward too, because the first few decades for the Brandenburg player can be a bit rough going. The early struggles are worth it, however.

EU4 is harder to learn due to a worse interface and having nearly a decade of new features piled onto it. CK3 has a simpler UI and it just came out so there's a fraction of the weird interactions to learn. CK3 is the easier to learn but it get's quite boring and repetitive. I've gone back to CK2.
